I know that the GOP believes a lot of ridiculous nonsense. It’s their stock-in-trade. But hearing this nutty theory espoused by the current Speaker of the House is more than a little jarring.
In a clear attack on the executive branch, the judicial system, states' rights, and the rule in law in America, Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson vowed on Tuesday to use all the powers of Congress at his disposal to end all four current criminal prosecutions of ex-president Donald Trump.
[…]
"President Trump has done nothing wrong here and he continues to be the target of endless lawfare," Speaker Johnson told reporters Tuesday during an official House news conference (video below). "It has to stop. And you're gonna see the United States Congress address this in every possible way that we can, because we need accountability. Ultimately, at the end of the day, it's bigger than President Trump. It's about the people's faith in our system of justice. And we're gonna get down to the bottom of it. All these cases need to be dropped, because they are a threat to our system."
Johnson is defending a former President who tried to overthrow the election in 2021. That was frankly the greatest possible crime against our democracy that could ever be attempted and he’s saying here that his being held accountable for that — in the DC and Fulton County case — is a “threat to our system?”
No.
Not holding Trump accountable for his criminal and unconstitutional actions is the threat.
I was listening to Ari Melber’s interview with RFK jr. the other day and while he was being asked about Trump’s attempt to overthrow the election he kept complaining that Melber was “trying to promote division.”
Melber, to his credit, argued that he was merely trying to get RFK Jr’s position on the issue. “Do you agree with this, or not?”
In response, Robert says he didn’t want to engage in the “demonization” of one side, and that Liberals are “obsessed with hating Trump.”
I think that’s a completely jaundiced and self-serving view.
I would argue that we aren’t “obsessed” with Trump — we’re obsessed with the fact that he tried to overthrow Congress. He organized and sent a mob of almost 10,000 people to attack our government. That is what we hate.
As a friend of mine says “We’re obsessed with Trump the way a cancer patient is obsessed with their tumors.”
You could make the same argument about Trumpers and MAGAs that they're “Obsessed with Biden” because they think he somehow stole the 2020 election. They think there was some secret behind-the-scenes plot to saving ballot boxes under a table and throwing people who were trying to stop the counting out of the room.
They think they’ve cracked the code of a massive unseen invisible conspiracy.
They can’t prove a shred of this in court. They failed on every recount, even hand recounts and every audit. Rudy Giuliani lost his defamation suit against two election workers to the tune of $150 Million. John Eastman is being disbarred. Sydney Powell, Kenneth Chesebro and Jenna Ellis have all pleaded guilty in the fake electors case.
They’re going to fucking prison for promoting and believing what MAGA think is Gospel.
But it’s the Liberals who are crazed by hate?
If we were, Johnson would have lost his job.
Johnson's job is being protected by Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and the vast majority of the Democratic caucus, which have promised to protect him should Greene call up her motion to vacate.
Claiming Republicans are "trying to keep steadying hands on the wheel here and keep the legislative branch moving and operating in the best interest of the people," Johnson also alleged, "One of the things that is also in jeopardy right now is our judicial branch. And it's our system of government itself. And I don't think we can say often enough here how much of that has been abused under this administration, and with local prosecutors, state prosecutors, and at the federal level, who are using lawfare. They're using our judicial system to go after political opponents."
No, they’re targeting criminals. Trump and his people have broken the law.
They conjured up Fake Electors from multiple states, forged documents and tried to have them sent to the Capitol to take the place of the real electors who were selected by the voters.
That’s. A. Crime.
During his screed Johnson claims that “crime is up” in New York - when that is flatly a lie.
New York City saw continued reductions in overall crime through the first quarter of 2024, both above ground, on streets throughout the five boroughs, and below ground, within the nation’s largest subway system. The single month of March 2024, compared to the same month last year, experienced even more drastic crime declines.
Overall crime in the transit system plummeted 23.5 percent in March, an achievement directly attributable to the 1,000 additional uniformed NYPD officers surged into the network each day. Another 800 NYPD officers were also recently deployed as part of “Operation Fare Play,” an initiative focused on enforcing fare evasion. The year-over-year crime decrease was led by double-digit percentage drops in major categories: Robbery was reduced 51.9 percent (26 vs. 54), grand larceny decreased 15.2 percent (89 vs. 105), and felony assault dropped 10.9 percent (49 vs. 55). From January 1 through March 31, 2024, overall crime in the transit system was down 1.1 percent (538 vs. 544), compared to the first quarter of 2023.
[…]
Citywide in March 2024 compared to March 2023, overall crime dropped 5 percent, a reduction of 505 incidents. Continued declines were recorded across many bellwether crimes, including murder, down 19.4 percent (29 vs. 36); burglary, down 17.4 percent (1,005 vs. 1,217); and grand larceny, down 7 percent (3,883 vs. 4,176). Robbery was flat in March (1,264 vs. 1,264), while grand larceny auto – the theft of motor vehicles – declined for the fourth month in a row, down 10.9 percent (1,037 vs. 1,164). From January 1 through the end of the first quarter of 2024, major crime and violence throughout the five boroughs dropped 2.4 percent, a decrease of 711 incidents.
Crime is not up in New York because they have a “Democrat Prosecutor” - that is simply bullshit.
And yet, he continues.
The Speaker continued his targeting, declaring Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's "case should never have been brought."
"If there's ever been an example of lawfare, everybody can look at that and see, the trial is being orchestrated by Democrats, supporters of President Biden who are trying to make a name for themselves. I mean, they're pretty open about that. They used it in their campaign flips. We've got a Democrat District Attorney, a Biden donor judge whose daughter is a Democratic political consultant and has clients that use the case in their solicitation emails to raise money."
Justice Juan Merchan, CNN reported last month, made a $15 donation to the Biden campaign, amid a total of $35 total in 2020.
Trump used his money to pay off Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels so that they wouldn’t damage his campaign in 2016. He tried to pretend that he was just paying legal fees and a retainer for a lawyer he already had on salary who didn’t do any actual legal work for him. That lawyer already went to jail for having done that.
But somehow Trump shouldn’t go to jail for it too?
Does it matter that the prosecutor is a Democrat? I would hope that a Republican Prosecutor would do exactly the same thing. If he wouldn’t - that - would be “lawfare.”
He’s complaining that the judge donated - $15? $15 fucking dollars? That makes him a rabid out-of-control Biden lover? Oh my God, what if he’s given $20!!!
Lord in heaven, it’s a scandal.
Judges, acting like citizens, giving their pocket change to politicians. What the fuck has the world come to?
Johnson also called Justice Merchan "a well-known Democrat" who "is pursuing an indefensible gag order on President Trump," and "trying to override President Trump's constitutional right to defend himself against the constant smears of his political opponents."
The Judge has a gag order on Trump to protect the safety of his own family, the jury and the witnesses because Trump’s flock have a habit of physically assaulting and threatening anyone they think is against Trump.
They fucking SWATTED David Pecker because he testified against Trump.
May 6 (Reuters) - Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, who testified at Donald Trump's criminal trial last month, was targeted in a fake emergency the same day he took the stand in New York, according to police records seen by Reuters.
The previously unreported April 25 "swatting" incident, or filing of a false report to trigger a potentially dangerous response, is one in a wave of violent threats against U.S. officials and other public figures in recent years.
A crazed Trump QAnon fan broke into Nancy Pelosi’s house and smashed her husband in the head with a hammer.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Paul Pelosi recounted publicly for the first time Monday what happened the night he was attacked by a man in the San Francisco home he shares with former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, recalling how shocking it was to see a man standing at his bedroom door, then how the man whacked him in the head with a hammer.
“It was a tremendous sense of shock to recognize that somebody had broken into the house and looking at him and looking at the hammer and the ties, I recognized that I was in serious danger, so I tried to stay as calm as possible,” Pelosi told jurors as he testified in the trial of David DePape, who is shown on video carrying out the attack.
Prosecutors say DePape bludgeoned Pelosi in the early hours of Oct. 28, 2022, just days before the midterm elections, and that he had rope and zip ties with him. DePape has pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official with intent to retaliate against the official for performance of their duties.
Oh, look he brought zip ties. Just like the people who attacked the Capitol.
What a coincidence.
Pointing to Special Counsel Jack Smith's prosecution of Donald Trump in the Espionage Act case, often called the "classified documents" case, Johnson called it "the weaponization of our justice system."
He called all the cases against the ex-president "a clear attempt to keep Donald Trump in the courtroom and off the campaign trail. That's what this is. It's an election interference. It is borderline criminal conspiracy and the American people see right through it."
At this rate, only one case, the Daniel’s case will probably be tried before the election. If he isn’t convicted - which he probably will be - he’ll be back on the campaign trail in a couple of weeks.
Judge Aileen Cannon — who the right-wing doesn’t ever complain about — has postponed the classified documents case based on the fact that she herself hasn’t issued 8 rulings. She’s stalling things because in a complete perversion of justice and the right to a speedy trial — she’s been stalling things.
There is no evidence that any of the documents he retained and refused to give back to the National Archives were ever declassified. And even if they were declassified, they were still government documents, not Trump’s personal private property. He had no right to have them, no right to lie to his own attorney and have them create a false affidavit claiming he didn’t have the documents, no right to try and have the surveillance tapes destroyed, and no right to defy a lawful subpoena.
To their credit, both Mike Pence and Joe Biden returned all classified documents they had accidentally retained as soon as they found them.
What the fuck is Trump’s excuse?
But that’s the problem - he doesn’t have an excuse - for any of it.
If the GOP truly believes that the Justice system — in multiple states — could possibly ever be this biased and perverted. Why exactly weren’t they out in the streets demonstrating along with BLM against systematic injustice? Why aren’t they making efforts to look at the sentences that criminal defendants receive for potential bias? Why aren’t they suggesting legislation that will put in strong oversight of the judicial system and against prosecutorial misconduct? Why aren’t they suggesting Grand Jury reform if they think the indictments are invalid? Why aren’t they suggesting reform of the Appellate Judges, if they think the trial court Judges decisions are suspect? Why aren’t they calling for bail reform, or gag order reform?
If these cases are so unfair, so biased and rigged - why aren’t they confident that the juries will see that and find him “not guilty” accordingly?
Shockingly, they aren’t demanding any of that. They’re aren’t saying that Trump is innocent of all the cases against him - they’re only demanding that people Let. Trump. Go.
Because they know he’s guilty, they just don’t care.
